Council and Committees

The work of Rockville United Church (RUC) is guided in accordance with its by-laws under the direction of a Council that is elected by the congregation.  Any member of RUC may become a member of the Council. Council members (referred to as Elders) are elected at the annual spring congregational meeting with terms varying from one year (to fill a vacancy) to two years and may serve for a maximum of six consecutive years.

Each Council member chairs a committee that helps manage the ministries of the church.  Our committees are some of the best small groups in the congregation! All RUC members are welcome to join any committee. Meetings are held either in person or on Zoom; they frequently begin with personal catching up; often include much laughter; and always come with a refreshing feeling of contribution.  Please contact Pastor Jennifer if you are interested or have questions.

Our Council
The Council is directed by a president who is elected by the Council from among its members. The president sets the agendas for both the monthly council meetings as well as our regular congregation meetings. The president is responsible for conducting Council and congregational meetings, managing Council votes, and making sure that the business of the church is moving forward. The Council also elects a secretary, treasurer, and financial secretary.

  • Administration and Personnel
As a committee we are responsible for church personnel matters, building use and other administrative concerns important to running the day-to-day operations. Elder, Denise Rozell
  • Building
Our mission is to make RUC’s building a welcoming and safe place for our congregation, visitors, and the community. We rely upon church volunteers as well as professional services and staff for building care. We strive to be good stewards of our church. Elder, vacant
  • Church in Society
Church in Society (CIS) reaches out to those in need locally, nationally and globally, sharing God’s love through our works inspired by faith. CIS is responsible for organizing annual projects, some of which are exclusive to RUC while others are part of a larger mission. We also evaluate and recommend new mission and outreach opportunities for our congregation. Elder, Donna Perry
  • Church Life
We strive to help RUC members grow in spirit and faith by providing ways to practice enjoying, loving, caring and supporting one another in our faith community. We nurture those in need of care in many ways, and we help celebrate our life together through events and fellowship activities. Elder, vacant.
  • Communications and Technology
Our mission is to provide a coherent, up-to-date, affordable technology infrastructure to support the work of RUC. We also develop and manage communications such as the website, our weekly e-newsletter, and social media presence in support of RUC’s membership, events and accomplishments. Elder, John Junod
  • Congregational Care
We care for RUC congregants in time of need by providing support, visiting, helping them keep in touch with their church family and organizing services (meals, transportation etc.) as needed. Elder, Phyllis Windle
  • Earthcare
The Earthcare Committee works to raise awareness, education, and outreach within our congregation and throughout our community by practicing green standards in our care and maintenance of grounds surrounding the church building. We are certified as an Earth Care Congregation (Presbyterian Church USA) and a Green Justice Congregation (United Church of Christ). Elder, Frances Hockensmith
  • Faith Formation
Faith Formation initiates, directs and supports opportunities for religious education for all ages. RUC is a place where children and youth matter, where they are meant to be seen and heard, where the youth are valued not as the future of the church but as the church here and now. We take Christian Education—for adults, youth and children—very seriously while having lots of fun. As a church, we strive to put God first; loving others as you would love yourself, and participating in God's plan by putting faith into action. We are a Safe Church and require all staff, teachers, and volunteers to participate in Safe Church training and background checks. Elder, Stacey Hagy
  • Finance
We ensure that the church creates and lives within budgets acceptable to the Council and congregation. We work to oversee, monitor and disperse church monies in a fiscally responsible manner. Elder, Bill Kirby
  • Membership
The Membership Team strives to create a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors to our church as well as to attract new visitors from our community. Membership greets all new and returning visitors before each service and works to guide visitors into membership and integrate new members into the congregation. Elder, Mary Wallace
  • Social Justice
Our goal is to educate and mobilize people through the work of RUC towards action on denominational, global, national, and local social justice issues, guided by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Church of Christ policy statements and RUC congregational priorities. Elder, Leta Kopp
  • Stewardship
We seek to cultivate a spirit of abundance within our congregation that leads us to share our time, treasure and talent with each other and with our community--local, national and global. We believe in God's promise to provide and pledge to live our statement of faith through the sharing of our gifts. Elder, Denise Giacommozi
  • Worship and Music
We work closely with our pastor to create meaningful and varied worship services for all. We encourage everyone's participation in Sunday worship; during our monthly Communion services; and in RUC's own cherished celebrations. Through the Music Director, WAM nurtures the presentation of meaningful music from a wide variety of traditions for worship and for the wider community and works to involve all ages in our music program. Elder, Carol Abrahams
