To quote from Samuel Terrien, in his book The Magnificat: Musicians as Biblical Interpreters, “The Magnificat is the song which according to the gospel of Luke (1:44-55), Mary sang to Elizabeth. After the future mother of John the Baptist had greeted the future mother of Jesus by saying, ‘Blessed art thou among women (vs 42),’ Mary replied by singing, ‘My whole being proclaims the greatness of the Lord (vs 46).’” Over the centuries, this song which “brings together the esthetics of divine worship and the ethics of human service” has inspired much art work and many volumes of music.
On Sundays, December 4, 11 and possibly 18, our own Sharon Ringe, Wesley Theological Seminary, and I will show samples of the art, play some of the music and lead discussions.
Come join us in the conference room at 9:30 on Sunday morning.
