Girls’ School in Mozambique
The Rockville United Church is please to support the CARAN Girls School in Maputo, Mozambique helping them complete the construction of latrines and showers began in 2011. The girls have been using the same outdoor restrooms since the school began in 1996 and they desperately need new facilities.
The congregation's donations through alternative Christmas giving will help them hire workers to complete the latrines and showers.
The school supports 35 girls, ages 6-15, who might otherwise be on the streets. Many of the girls live at the school. In addition to formal education, they receive counseling, medical care and training in nutrition, computer and language skills, sewing and cooking. The girls generate income by selling fresh water to the local community. They have also expanded CARAN's garden and are beginning to raise chickens. Recreation, games and traditional dancing are also part of their activities.

The Rockville United Church responding to Hurricane Sandy with Hygeine kits, clean-up kits and funds for Disaster assistance. We hope to schedule a clean-up/repair trip in the Spring.
In the face of natural disasters, violence, or grinding poverty, Hygiene Kits can mean the difference between sickness and health for struggling families. Hygiene Kits contain items essential to personal hygiene -- a critical issue in a disaster -- a hand towel, a washcloth, a comb, a nail clipper, a bar of soap, a toothbrush, and Band-Aids. Small items we often take for granted mean a lot to someone who doesn’t have them.
